Some notes on CE marking

The manufacturer after having complied all the obligations of the Machinery Directive, mainly the assessment of the risks and eliminated or reduced them, he/she is responsible also to affix the CE marking on the machine.

According to the directive, the machines placed on the market and/or put into service in the EEA countries have to have affixed the CE marking. A CE marking is a guarantee that a machine is safe throughout its foreseeable lifetime “including the phases of transport, assembly, dismantling, disabling and scrapping” (Requirement 1.1.2 of Annex I of Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC).

Sometimes, individual machines are assembled together. This may be an initiative of the end-customer. The assembled machines have to be considered as a single machine. The person doing the assembly will become the manufacturer of the whole system and will be responsible for the new CE marking.

In this regard, a preamble to the Machinery Directive indicates as follows: "in order to avoid confusion between any CE markings which might appear on certain components and the CE marking corresponding to the machinery, it is important that the latter marking be affixed alongside the name of the person who has taken responsibility for it, namely the manufacturer or his authorised representative".

It is to bear in mind that the partly completed machines are the only machines that do not need a CE marking.
